My First Garden

On the morning of March 21st. My hubby and I went out in our backyard and decided on a place to put our garden. I didn't want it too far to the back of the yard. I love to just look out our back door and see everything. :)
To view larger pictures, just click the picture.

I left for a few hours with my sisters to go pick up our plants for our garden. I already had the Creole Tomato and Sweet Bell Pepers from my sisters for my birthday.
When I came home, my hubby had already dug the spot for our veggie garden.

I placed the plants according to how I thought they should go, placing the cucumbers to the back. Cucumbers grow on vines, and my cucumbers will grow along our fence. I bought a 3 pack of already growing Cucumbers plants, and I had 4 seedlings growing.

My sisters suggested I plant Merigolds in with the veggies to prevent bugs from getting to them. I didn't mind purchasing them as I think they are beautiful flowers. Can't wait for the rest of the plant to fully bloom!

These are the cucumber seedlings I had growing in an empty egg carton. I'm really surprised they grew so much and that they are still growing. lol I purchased 3 more as I wasn't sure they seedlings would continue to grow.

This is me (hubby took this pick) planting my herbs in their planter. I was told it would be better to do it this way, I hope they continue to grow!

Here's the finished project!
My herbs, strawberries and floral plants.

Our Garden: Grape Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, Sweet Bell Peppers, Cucumbers and Creole Tomato.

Five Ways to Stretch the Dollar in Today's Economy

1. Shop at dollar stores.
Believe it or not, the neighborhood Dollar Tree stores have seen a boom in consumer spending.

According to AARP, "Dollar Tree merchandisers work with food suppliers to help them develop products at a cost low enough to allow the company to make some profit. Sometimes, a manufacturer has excess inventory that it's willing to unload at a discount. That closeout merchandise provides some of the brand names that Dollar Tree carries. In other cases, a brand-name manufacturer might make a special size that Dollar Tree can sell for a buck. The stores have a "freshness guaranteed" policy and pledge to sell no items past their expiration dates."

Some foods found at the Dollar Tree are: TV dinners, Frozen Peaches, Mixed Fruit and Veggies, Cheese, Jello Parfait, Drink, Shrimp, and theirs more and every $ Tree is different in what they carry. I've even found those Fiber One bars!

2. Trading.
On the November 17, 2008 "Your Money" section of the New York Daily News, Jean Chatsky and Arielle McGowen wrote an article entitled "Hard Times Call for Creativity." They make the case for trading, renting, borrowing, and taking that which you need but can't afford. They cite a number of websites such as Book Mooch and Swaptree.

Swaptree:
If you have books that have already been read or DVDs that you no longer have use for, you can go to either of these two sites and trade them for other books or DVDs you might like to own. It is estimated that "Swaptree users received approximately $30,000 worth of free media every day by trading." All is required is the cost of shipping; however, sending items via media mail is the most affordable.

Zwaggle
In addition, another website mentioned in their article is Zwaggle.com. This is a site for parents whose toddlers "grow out of clothes and shoes." Here you can trade the items no longer worn by your toddler for things you need such as high chairs, strollers, and other necessary wear.

3. Renting.
Another unique idea is to rent an ensemble for that special occasion. Avelle and From Bags to Riches rent out designer handbags while Borrowed Bling rents out jewelry. This is designed for a one-time event and not for an item that you will be wearing more than once.

4. Borrowing.
"Neighborhood and Lending Circle" are two sites where you can borrow items online. This network is comprised of individuals in your city who prefer to lend/borrow items instead of purchasing them outright.

5. Taking.
Taking unwanted items is another way to stretch the dollar. This has become the most popular method as evidenced by the website "Freecycle." Whether you need furniture, appliances, toys, coupons, or anything else you can't afford, this site enables its members to post items they want to give away or are in need of. You can log on to determine if there is anything you would like and if so, you can make arrangements to pick up the items. There is no fee required. Three other websites are mentioned in this article as well: Freesharing, Sharing is Giving, and FreeUse.

I recieved this info from a group I am in.

Start a garden

Last year when we moved into our home, I decided that I wanted to create a garden and make it something I'd participate in for frugality and taste. Also growing your own garden is an amazing way to be frugal.

It is the perfect time here in the south to start planting, but it is a bit early in the pacific northwest to begin planting (they are still getting snow) but preperations can get started indoors. If you are considering gardening here are some quick tips to save money as you get started.

This is how frugal gardening can be:
“One mini packet of broccoli seeds: $3.25 for about 100 seeds. even if you only plant 3 seeds, you get more than one head of broccoli per plant and you’ve more than just redeemed the cost you'd would pay in the store, not to mention it’s ORGANIC and tastes way better! You can save the seed packet for next season or plant a few more the next month so that you have a steady supply, or share with a friend and save even more money.”

1. Plant seeds not plants
It is quite inexpensive to purchase seeds. You can buy seeds from the $ Tree for 10/1.00 or pick them out at Wal-Mart for $.75 - $1.00 each. You can also find seeds at your local hardware store, gardening store, even 99 cent store in some places. Most climates will allow you to plant seeds if you start earlier. If you are in an area with a very short growing season (AK or northen states) you may want to plant some seeds indoor near windows now. Then in a month (or two) you’ll have some good looking plants to place in your garden.

I started my seedlings the first week of March. I only had 4 cucumber seedlings pop up and they are now planted in my garden. I had to go buy the tomatoes and peppers because I got a late start for seeds. I will however be purchasing more seeds to plant next year.

2. Think creatively with space
If you live in an apartment or condo don’t despair. Herbs do amazing in windowsills. Work with what you have you’ll be surprised how creative you can get!

Herb Ideas for planting:
For an italian mix, plant some Basil, Oregano, Marjaram, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme. Other good herbs to have are Onion Chives (use in salad and soups), Cilantro, and Parseley. Also plant some Orange Mint, Spearmint, and Lemon Balm for Ice Tea flavoring. Strawberries are better planted in pots instead of the ground (if the berries hit the ground, they will rot!

3. Start a compost bin
A Compost bin can be quite inexpensive, it can just be a “pile” in your yard where you place food scraps and lawn trimmings but to work best it should be some type of bin as this promotes the composting process and creates better fertilizer faster.

This I don't do. My neighbor has a cat and we have a dog and I just know they'll meet in the bin! LOL

4. Start thinking how you will use your harvest
I started making plans (yes this early) for how I would make the most of my harvest. Will I freeze my extra strawberries, herbs and peppers. I do not have a plan for the tomatoes, I'm not sure if I'll have any left over. This helps me prepare for the season when fresh produce and fruit overflows at our house and helps me think through how I can keep it from going to waste.

5. Start a co-op
Join gardening efforts with friends, plant a large crop of your favorite fruit or vegetable and have them plant a large crop of another produce or vegetable you both enjoy. Then split the harvest. This can be a great space saver. You could also choose to go in together with seed packets to get the most value for your buck.

OK lets get those comments and questions rolling! What tips do you have for saving money as you begin your garden (more gardening saving tips coming for how to best harvest and use your hard earned fruit and produce). I know there are lot’s of great ideas out there so let’s start sharing with each other!

Do you have a good idea on how to save money that you want to share? I’d love to have some guest bloggers please contact me with your idea! AFrugalLife (at) cox (dot) net
